This was just an absolutely awful movie which is sad because it could have been a really great film.
The actors had the depth of playing cards but that's not their fault. This was a stellar cast of truly significant skill and experience but with so many different plot lines this movie tried to cover they had no opportunity to develop their characters.
Here are a number of the issues this movie tried to address:
-The relationship (real and/or perceived) between the US government and the pharmaceutical industry.
-The relationship (real and/or perceived)between the American Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the pharmaceutical industry.
-The relationship (real and/or perceived)between the CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO.
-The manner in which agencies such as the CDC and WHO work in conjunction to analyze the cause and spread of pandemics and how they are dealt with.
-The role of rogue "conspiracy theory" bloggers have in the dissemination of information.
-The affect a widespread pandemic would have on society.
Any one of the above would have been sufficient for a single movie providing the cast with ample opportunity to develop their characters, expand the story line and make us feel for them. As this movie turned out we feel nothing for the characters.
Example. Anyone who is a parent can certainly understand the manner in which Damon's character is protective of his daughter but without a single shred of any significant on-screen interaction between Damon and Paltrow it is hard for the audience to appreciate the love Damon felt for her. As a result, when Damon finally breaks down at the end of the film after having lost Paltrow in the beginning the audience is left feeling as though they are on the outside looking in. This is just one example of this film many, many failings.
